Self-Defense in San Francisco: Why Adults Are Choosing BJJ and Muay Thai

Personal safety is a real conversation in San Francisco. Free personal-safety workshops keep showing up on local event calendars, and more adults are asking a simple question: what actually works if something goes wrong? A one-hour workshop is a great start. Building skills that stay with you takes regular practice, and that is where a martial art comes in.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: control without strikes

Most real-life confrontations end up close, in a grab or on the ground. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is built for exactly that. You learn to stay calm when someone is holding you, to use leverage instead of strength and to get back to your feet safely. Because it does not rely on size, BJJ is one of the best options for smaller people, women and anyone who wants to protect themselves without hurting someone.

Muay Thai: distance, timing and fitness

Muay Thai, the art of eight limbs, teaches you to keep distance, read movement and strike with punches, kicks, elbows and knees. Even if you never use it outside the gym, it builds awareness and reaction time. It is also one of the toughest full-body workouts you can do.

You don’t need to be in shape to start

This is the number one worry we hear. You do not get in shape to start training, you start training to get in shape. Beginner classes break down every movement step by step, and you go at your own pace. Most of our students walked in with zero experience.

What to expect in your first month

Safety in class comes first

A good academy has no ego on the mat. At AB MMA, partners are matched by size and level, beginners train at a controlled pace and coaches watch every round. You learn to handle pressure without getting hurt.

Classes that fit a work schedule

Adults train in the morning and evening: BJJ on Tuesday and Thursday at 8 AM, Beginner BJJ Monday to Friday at 6 PM, Muay Thai on Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM and BJJ on Saturday at 11 AM. See the full schedule.
