Your First Muay Thai Class: What to Expect (and How to Prepare)

Muay ThaiAB Mixed Martial Arts · October 18, 2026

Beginner throwing a kick on Thai pads held by a coach at AB MMA in San Francisco

Daylight saving time ends on November 1, and evenings get dark early. It is the time of year when a lot of people want a reason to get out of the house after work and move. If you have been thinking about trying Muay Thai, here is exactly what your first class looks like, so nothing catches you off guard.

What to bring

Muay Thai is trained barefoot, so no special shoes are needed. If you don’t have gloves or hand wraps yet, let us know when you book and we will help you get set up.

How the class is structured

Warm-up (about 10 minutes): jump rope or light cardio, stretching and some shadowboxing to get your body moving.

Technique (about 20 minutes): the coach shows a basic combination, like a jab, cross and roundhouse kick, and breaks it down step by step: stance, footwork and how to turn your hip.

Pad work (about 20 minutes): you practice the combination with a partner holding pads. This is where Muay Thai gets fun. You get instant feedback and a serious workout.

Cool-down: core work and stretching.

Will I have to spar?

No. Beginners do not spar in their first class. Sparring comes later, only when you feel ready, and always controlled and with protective gear.

How hard is it?

You will sweat, but you set your own pace. Coaches adjust for beginners, and nobody expects you to keep up with experienced students on day one. Take breaks when you need them and drink water.
